Packing For National in a Shoebox

By Hattie Ratliff

Going to National.

What fun.

We are going to talk writing with people that are actually interested, visit old friends, wine and dine, and play dress up. But first we have to pack. I don't have all the answers but maybe you will pick up something you can use from this article.

Let's pack. I know a shoebox is a little small but not by much. The idea is to look nice, be comfortable, impress many and not carry a steamer trunk.

If you are going shopping before National here are a few suggestions.

  1. Try to purchase lightweight crushable fabric clothing. "Test" crush the hem of the clothing in your hand, release, if it is not wrinkled buy it.
  2. Build your selections around one basic color. (Black, Navy, Taupe, etc.)
  3. My basic includes the following:
  4. A pair of shoes to go with your basic color. (A style to go with both pants and skirts)

If you have lightweight crushable outfits you can make them pack smaller by placing them in Ziploc bags. I pack my matching jewelry with each outfit, in their own "snack size" baggy. You can purchase a laminated product for about $17.00 per bag, but I found that the Ziploc bags work just as well and are cheaper. Put the clothes, one piece at a time in a gallon size zip lock bag, press all the air out of the bag as you seal it. Undies and nighties are also air sealed in bags. Pack in this order.

  1. Heavy items on bottom (shoes, etc.) Make sure you fill your shoes with something, socks, stockings etc. No wasted space.
  2. Stack bags on top.

If you do not have crushable outfits you can still save wasted space and prevent some of the wrinkles packing creates. Lay out each piece of clothing and place a plastic bag (the kind you get your groceries in works fine) on top, roll tightly together. Pack in the same order as above. You will notice you can pack a lot more when you roll instead of folding.

Let's talk shoes. Two pairs will be enough, one-dress shoe in your basic color and one casual. BOTH COMFORTABLE. Not enough you say? Come on now, do you remember what shoes someone wore last year? I don't. Add your personals and this suitcase is ready.

In your carry-on bag pack the following, each in their own smaller bags to save space and add organization:

  1. Purchase travel size containers of your make-up, shampoo, etc. or empty containers to add your own supplies.
  2. Pack essentials like Band-Aids, first aid ointment, spot remover pads, sewing kit, etc.
  3. Specifically for a writing convention, I bring pens, highlighters, sticky notes, mints, and an extra pair of reading glasses.
  4. Don't forget any medication you might need.
  5. Place all these small bags inside your carry-on bag.
  6. If you are checking your other piece of luggage, I suggest you also pack in your carry-on a nighty, and if you have room, a changing of clothes.

Top your bag off with your current Romance Read in Progress and I will see you at National.
